Choosing what part of Koh Tao to stay on can really shape the type of holiday you end up experiencing. Even though the island is by far the smallest out of the 3 main Gulf Islands which also included Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Koh Tao has vastly different experiences depending on where you stay.
This tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand is famous for its world-class diving, laid-back atmosphere, and stunning beaches, but accommodation varies hugely depending on where you base yourself. Some areas are buzzing with nightlife and restaurants, while others offer quiet escapes with direct access to coral reefs and hidden coves.
As Koh Tao is only 8 square miles in size, wherever you stay on the island you can easily access all other parts within about 20 minutes. You don’t need to worry that choosing one part of the island to stay in will restrict you from visiting the rest. You can book accommodation in the tranquil Tanote Bay on the east side and then easily take a taxi in to Sairee on the west coast for a livelier night out.
If you are wondering where to stay in Koh Tao, this guide breaks down the island’s best locations based on your travel style and who you are travelling with. I hope this will help you choose the perfect base for your adventure.
Accommodation notes:
For Each location I have provided 3 accommodation options. I have tried to provide a budget option (sometimes hostels), a mid range option, then a luxury option for each. Some locations such as Tanote Bay don’t really have hostels so in locations like this the 3 options will be within similar budget ranges.
Prices were based on November 2026 with November being at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the cool season – which is a great time to visit.
Enjoy!
Quick Koh Tao Tips
Before booking your accommodation, there are a few things worth knowing about Koh Tao:
- Transport: can be tricky in some remote areas, so renting a scooter or a quad bike may be necessary. Taking taxis may also be necessary.
- Peak season: (December to April) books up quickly, so reserve accommodation early.
- Hills can be steep: especially in quieter bays, so check accessibility before booking.
- Things to do: There are plenty of things to do in Koh Tao, however most are based around the beach and the island has a lot more of a chilled out vibe than other islands in the area.
- Scuba diving: This is the place to go to Scuba Diving, many people will be at the island to complete their PADI Diving Course.

Where to Stay in Koh Tao
Sairee Beach: Best for Lively Atmosphere.
If you want the classic Thai island island buzz where you can step out of your accomodation and be in the heart of a bustling street, then Sairee Beach is by far the best place to stay. Stretching along the west coast, this is the island’s busiest area and the heart of its nightlife scene.
By day, Sairee offers long sandy beaches, beachside cafés, the classic evening down pours of rain, dive schools, and sunset bars. By night, it transforms into Koh Tao’s social hotspot, with fire shows, beach parties, live music, and bustling nightlife.
As a result of the areas buzz Sairee is ideal for:
- Backpackers
- Solo travellers
- Young couples
- Divers
- Social travellers
Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to boutique beachfront resorts, making it one of the most versatile places to stay.

Budget: Koh Tao Silver Na’ Hostel – £30/night

The beds are super comfy and the dorms very modern with reliable air conditioning. The hostel even has complimentary bicycles you can use to explore the island. You also have a buffet breakfast included. The atmosphere and friendliness of the staff really sets this place apart and you will be sure to meet some fantastic friends – glorious!
Mid Range: Sunny Side Resort Koh Tao – £80/night

Sunny side resort is one of the more quirky accommodation options on this list and great if you are looking for something a little different. They are called villas but they are really like big Iglus that you stay in which are very unique! Each villa has its own kitchenette, private bathroom, and balcony – and the beds are very comfy indeed! Sairee Beach is only a 9-minute walk away.
Luxury: Koh Tao Height Pool Villas – £180/night

Each Villa is extremely spacious with a separate living room with huge TV – I don’t know why you’d need that though! The Villas have their own patio and private infinity pool where you can look out over the bay. This is perfect for some luxury and privacy as all your are surrounded by is jungle. The resort is at the top of a steep hill so bear this in mind and mopeds might struggle to get up it!
Tanote Bay: Best for Snorkelling.
For travellers seeking tranquillity and exceptional snorkelling, Tanote Bay is one of Koh Tao’s standout locations and its also currently my favourite part of the island. Tanote Bay not too easy to to get to without transport so it has one of Koh Tao’s quietest beaches providing peace and chilled out vibes.
Situated on the island’s east coast, Tanote Bay is known for:
- Crystal-clear water
- Vibrant coral reefs teeming with life
- Excellent snorkelling directly from shore
- A large granite boulder in the middle of the bay that is great for jumping off.
- Fewer crowds and a very chilled vibe.
This area feels much more peaceful than Sairee, making it perfect for travellers who prioritise natural beauty over nightlife. The bay’s sheltered waters are often calm, offering ideal conditions for spotting tropical fish and colourful marine life.
Why stay here?
Tanote Bay offers some of the best snorkelling on Koh Tao without needing a boat trip, while still providing stunning accommodation with panoramic sea views. There are no hostels in Tanote Bay so I would suggest this area is best for couples, groups, or families.
