Koh Phangan is an lush green island situated in the Gulf of Thailand. The island sits right in-between its neighbours Koh Tao and Koh Samui, with the three together making up the Gulf Islands.
Out of the 3 islands it is the second largest and combines bits and bobs from the other two islands. It has the nature and secluded beaches of Koh Tao, whilst also offering the buzz and nightlife of Koh Samui. Koh Phangan really does offer a bit of everything for your visit.
While the island is probably best known for the Full Moon Party, and the antics and hangovers that go with it, this is all but a tiny part of what Koh Phangan has to offer. If you are put off by the idea of late nights and drunk beach parties then fear not.
I spent 3 nights on the island with friends, and we didn’t see a single bright bucket full of alcohol and straws during our stay. In fact we stayed in boutique hotels, went on fishing trips, ate delicious traditional food, and felt genuinely secluded (in a good way) where we stayed.
The island offers different vibes in different locations. There are parts of the island that offer peaceful yoga retreats and an off the grid feel. Other areas have long stretching beaches with hardly anyone else to share it with. There are also luxury beachfront stays and lively social hubs. And yes, if its your cup of tea, we can’t forget the islands lively party scene in the south east
Where you stay in Koh Phangan will completely shape your experience.
Whether you’re backpacking, travelling as a couple, or just looking to switch off for a few days, choosing the right area is key. In this guide, I’ll break down the best places to stay in Koh Phangan based on your travel style, so you can book with confidence.
Accommodation notes:
- For each location I have offered 3 accommodation options: low priced, mid priced, and high end.
- Low priced does not mean bad – there are genuinely some fantastic hotels for a steal.
- Prices are based on booking for November 2026 which is the beginning of the cool season.
- Prices based on 2 people for 1 night
Koh Phangan Quick Tips
- Getting there: There is no airport on Koh Phangan. Ferry is the only arrival option. These can be taken from the mainland, Koh Samui (which has flights from Bangkok), or Koh Tao.
- Getting around: Scooter rental is the easiest way to explore whilst taxis are easy to hire.
- Haad Rin: Avoid staying here if you’re not interested in the party scene (especially around Full Moon dates).
- Size: Koh Phangan is quite large so if there are specific activities you want to see then don’t book accommodation too far away.
- Snorkelling and Scuba Diving: If this is important to you then you should visit Koh Tao instead.
- Suncream: Try to take reef safe suncream to protect the beautiful marine environment.
- Cash: Always carry some cash with you for beach bars and emergencies, there may not be an ATM near your accomodation.
Where to Stay in Koh Phangan Map
Although not as big as Koh Samui, the island is bigger than many people think. Each area offers a completely different vibe. The south and east coast are known for nightlife and accessibility, while the north and west are quieter, more scenic, and ideal for relaxing.
You’ll find most accommodation clustered around the coastline, so picking the right beach or bay is more important than anything else.
