Fancy a holiday abroad to an urban city with a difference? Then perhaps a trip to Lusaka, the capital and largest city in Zambia in southern Africa, could be the ideal place to head to. Think traditional, tree-lined streets, busy markets, high rise blocks of flats, and modern streets of shops.
Lusaka is a different kind of city to the norm because it is not home to any real historical sights or attractions, museums, or attractions. Despite this, the city has something about it – an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world – which makes it such a delightful place to visit and spend time exploring.
Renowned for its amazing food and wonderful hotels, as well as the remote wilderness right outside of the city, Lusaka is somewhere that can make a great place to visit, especially if you are already considering taking a trip to Zambia.
Bearing all of that in mind, the question is: how can you make the most of Lusaka and being in Zambia?
Book a safari
Are you an animal lover? Have you always dreamed of seeing the big five? Well, your trip to Zambia could be the perfect time to do that. Just outside of the city’s borders you will find miles and miles of remote wilderness, like everywhere else in Zambia. Whether you want to explore the wilderness on foot, spend a night camping there, or go on a traditional jeep-driven safari, you can do so. You cannot go to Zambia and not book a safari.
Choose the right base
For exploring the city and the surrounding area, it is important that you book the right base – AKA the ideal hotel. You want to choose somewhere that is modern and comes with all of the bells and whistles of a modern hotel, like free internet access, for instance. You also want to pick somewhere that offers more than just a room for the night, such as Protea Hotel Lusaka, for instance, which also boasts an impressive range of other amenities. It’s also important to think about the location of your accommodation, and how easy it will be to get from there to the city centre, and other areas that you want to explore.
See the wildlife
If you are an animal lover, aside from going on safari, you can also choose to get up close and personal with some elephants in Lilayi Elephant Nursery, which is located on the south side of the city, on the outskirts. This is a sanctuary for orphaned and rescued elephants that works to rehabilitate elephants and get them back into the wild wherever possible. You can talk to their keepers, watch them being fed, and watch them play.
Lusaka has a lot to offer as a travel destination, even if it does not have as much cultural, heritage and sights to offer. It is still somewhere that it is worth taking the time to visit and explore, particularly if you are someone who loves animals.
